A spaniel born for kings

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel traces its roots to 17th-century England, where it was cherished by royalty — most notably King Charles II, who refused to go anywhere without his beloved toy spaniels. So deep was his devotion that he issued a royal decree allowing his Cavaliers in any public space, including the Houses of Parliament.

By the 19th century, the breed nearly disappeared after crossing with flat-nosed Asian breeds. But in the 1920s, an American named Roswell Eldridge offered a prize to revive the "old-style" spaniel — longer muzzle, flat skull, and that unmistakable gentle expression. Breeders answered the call, and by 1945, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was officially recognized as a distinct breed.
